Toll plazas will soon disappear as India prepares to launch a new AI-based free-flow toll system allowing vehicles to pass at 80 kmph.
India’s national highways are set for a major upgrade with the introduction of a multi-lane free-flow toll system and AI-based highway management. As per the central government, the new toll system will be fully implemented by 2026, eliminating long queues and stopping at toll plazas.
Under this system, toll collection will be done using number plate recognition, GPS technology, and FASTag, ensuring automatic toll deduction without vehicles needing to slow down. Vehicles will be able to cross toll points at speeds of up to 80 kmph, making travel faster and smoother.
The government said the new toll mechanism will also help prevent toll evasion, improve transparency, and reduce corruption. Currently, toll payments can take several minutes, but the upcoming system aims to make toll crossings completely seamless.
