The Indian government has fast-tracked the 1,856 MW Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River. This major infrastructure move marks a shift in the Indus Waters Treaty dynamics and carries significant implications for regional water security.
Planned as a run-of-the-river project, Sawalkote will come up along the Chenab in the Udhampur and Ramban districts. On February 5, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) floated tenders to begin construction.
