Mumbai Water Metro to Launch in December 2026

Mumbai is set to introduce a major boost to its urban transport network with the launch of a new water metro system, expected to begin operations in phases from December 2026. The project aims to connect South Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, offering commuters a faster and greener alternative to road travel.

The Mumbai Water Metro will feature battery-powered electric ferries operating across six to eight routes within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Authorities estimate the project cost at around ₹1,200 crore, positioning it as a large-scale investment in sustainable infrastructure.

Initially, services are expected to cover key routes such as Nariman Point, Worli, Bandra, Juhu, and Versova. Over time, connectivity will expand further across coastal and creek areas once feasibility studies are completed and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalized.

One of the major objectives of the water metro is to reduce road congestion, which remains a significant challenge in Mumbai. By shifting a portion of daily commuters to water-based transport, officials hope to ease traffic pressure while cutting down travel time. The system is also expected to link directly to Navi Mumbai International Airport, improving airport accessibility from the city’s southern business districts.

The project is reportedly modeled after the successful Kochi Water Metro, which operates electric and hybrid boats for urban commuting. By adopting a similar eco-friendly model, Mumbai aims to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions.
