Unpaid Toll Alert: Vehicles with Pending Dues Cannot Be Sold

The Central Government has introduced a major reform in India’s highway toll system by implementing barrier-free tolling, while also tightening rules for toll defaulters. Under the new system, vehicles with pending toll dues will not be allowed to be sold or transferred, marking a strict step to ensure compliance.

According to the new rules, unpaid toll amounts will now be digitally linked to vehicle records, including vehicle sales and fitness certificates. If toll dues are pending, owners may face issues in selling their vehicle, transferring ownership, or obtaining fitness clearance.

The government has also empowered authorities to issue e-notices, suspend FASTag accounts, and impose penalties on defaulters. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) will be mandatory during vehicle transfer to confirm that all toll payments have been cleared.

Officials say the move aims to curb toll evasion, improve transparency, and make electronic toll collection more effective across national highways. While barrier-free tolling will improve traffic flow, the stricter enforcement ensures that toll payments cannot be avoided.
