Chandigarh’s inspiring “Broom Warrior,” retired IPS officer Inderjit Singh Sidhu, has been awarded the Padma Shri for his extraordinary contribution to social service and civic responsibility. At the age of 88, Sidhu has become a symbol of dignity of labour and grassroots change through his selfless dedication to street cleaning.

A former DIG of the Punjab cadre, Inderjit Singh Sidhu chose a path far removed from authority and uniforms after retirement. For years, he has been seen sweeping roads, collecting garbage, and cleaning public spaces around Sector 49, Chandigarh, often starting his day at dawn with just a broom and a rehri.

What began as a quiet personal effort soon transformed into a powerful movement of civic sense. His daily acts of service inspired residents, families, and citizens across the city to take responsibility for their surroundings, proving that real change begins with individual action.

Sidhu’s commitment gained nationwide attention last year after videos of his work went viral on social media, earning admiration from people across India. Leaders including Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria praised him as a shining example of civic responsibility beyond age, rank, or position.

The Padma Shri honour is not just recognition of Sidhu’s work, but a reminder that discipline, consistency, and respect for labour can transform cities and mindsets alike. Chandigarh today celebrates not a slogan, but a citizen who chose action every single morning.
